About TheDow
TheDow as a concept was born when I decided to purchase my first domain name. I have no recollection what led me to choose TheDow, but I remember that when I went to purchase the name, every top level domain for “thedow” was chosen already by The Dow Jones Industrial Average except .org. :) So I ended up with .org.
TheDow as a person is a little more complex. I’m a very happily married man who enjoys reading fantasy, literature, theology, science fiction, mystery, mafia stories, etc. (Almost anything I can get my hands on.) My wife and I are members of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church here in the Central Valley, and we’re very happy to be at a church that takes proper doctrine very seriously. I also play video games, and we enjoy the shows House, Boston Legal, CSI (Miami and Original), Mythbusters, and The Office.
I started TheDow as a blog a couple years back as a Rants section on my website. The website is now gone, but the rants section has evolved into a more complex blog, and I thoroughly enjoy posting in it, as well as reading other blogs and commenting. I decided to call it “Not So Famous…” one day when I was browsing around the web looking for a new title. I came across a site of a comedienne named Jen whose site was called Jen Is Famous. I thought it was a funny, pretentious title for a site. Since I’m not so famous, I thought it was fitting, so here it is. I’ll change it from time to time, so don’t get too attached. :)
I am of Scottish descent, and I visited the land of my ancestors in June of 2007, which was very enjoyable. (And you can still find all of my many blog posts while I was there under the Scotland tag.) I enjoy Celtic Music, reading about the history of Scotland, and playing a few Celtic instruments. (Tin Whistle, and I squawk on my practice chanter, though I despair of ever being able to play the bagpipes.)
In a more classical vein, I play all of the clarinets (17 years) and saxophones (10 years), and I can play chords/worship music on the piano (12 years). I’ve been told I sing decently, but I’d usually rather listen to someone with a beautiful voice, like my wife. :) I don’t play half as much as I’d like, but I’m hoping to get back into it now that I’m done with school.
I love to write. I have been working on and off on a novel for the past 2 years or so. I’ll not mention much about it here, but I’ve been told it’s rather good. I got severely busy after I wrote the first two chapters and a GREAT DEAL of background on the characters, and never picked up the thread. It’s really difficult to remember what I was going to say immediately following what I’ve already written for some reason. I have the larger story arc in mind entirely…it’s just getting there from where I’ve written myself that’s the problem. I think as soon as I can get past where I am, things will start flowing again. That’s the hope anyway!
Another topic I enjoy discussing is beer and ale. I am somewhat of a beer snob much in the same way as some are considered wine snobs. I believe life is too short to drink inferior ale, so I drink only what I consider to be good. However, I don’t knock others for liking their own styles. To each their own. If you enjoy Bud or Coors, go ahead and enjoy it. However, if you’re curious about what I consider “good beer”, feel free to comment, and I’ll be happy to write a post about it or something. There are good light ales, just as there are good dark ales. Not all good beer has to be dark. Finally, I make my own beer when I get the chance. I usually post the results here, so if you’re interested, keep your eyes peeled.
I’m sure I could continue typing until the return of Christ, but in an effort to avoid boring you all to death, I think I’ll end it here. Feel free to peruse my blog and comment all you like. I post these things so that someone will read them. I attempt to entertain, inform, and sometimes just plain annoy my readers so they will comment on what I’ve written. I thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy my corner of the Web.
