Saga of moving, part 1
So yesterday, we moved…well, we moved some of our stuff. I know you can’t tell this from my writing, but my fingers are SORE. To be honest, we moved MOST of our stuff. All the really big stuff except for the kitchen table and the exercise machine, which we might actually be able to use in the new place. So much stuff actually worked out yesterday, I’m still sort of amazed!
To begin with, I knew the DSL would be a problem in the new place. It’s a fairly old house, and the phone wiring left a lot to be desired. To be honest, there was a single (very ancient) wire going from the box to the wall. There wasn’t really a jack inside the house, per se…sort of a naked wire that was SORT OF hooked up to a jack-like thing. Anyway, when the DSL switched over yesterday, we discovered that the wire was bad. (i.e. worthless.) What’s more, the phone box is actually in the basement of the house. Yes, we have a basement. I bet my boss could count the number of times I’ve been inside that basement on the fingers of his right hand…my boss is missing his right hand. That’s right, my friends, I am SCARED to go in the basement. Kim and Gabe insist, however, that it would be a perfect room for the fermentation of the juice of the barley. So Kim says she’ll clean it out. From what I’ve seen, that’s a job for Superman.
Anyway, with the assistance of my father-in-law and myself, Gabe hooked up a new cable and with a splitter and coupler, ran it to the house, so we now have 2 phone jacks! WOOO! And DSL works excellently. Our awesomeness amazes even us, sometimes.
The other thing that could have been a problem was the Satellite. This turned out to be a problem only in our minds, as a single coaxial cable can carry multiple signals, so there was no need to string a second wire. (The last inhabitants of this home also had satellite, so the dish was already up and everything.) The installer said it was one of the easiest jobs he’d ever had to do. Took him all of 20 minutes. We got the DVR computer hooked up in enough time to record Dinner: Impossible yesterday at 6pm, which was my goal. (Robert vs. Guy Fietti! WOO!)
So, today, we’re getting the rest of our stuff from the old place and getting settled in. We really like the new place so far, and are quite happy with the decision to move. To be completely honest, my body is much less happy with our decision. It’ll get over it, if not as fast as it used to.
