For my wonderful wife…

Published by Taliesin under Random Topics

“She’s got a way about her.
I don’t know what it is,
But I know I can’t live without her.
She’s got a way of pleasin’.
I don’t know what it is,
But there doesn’t have to be a reason anyway.

She’s got a smile that heals me.
I don’t know why it is,
But I have to laugh when she reveals me.
She’s got a way of talkin’.
I don’t know why it is,
But it lifts me up when we are walkin’ anywhere.

She comes to me when I’m feelin’ down,
Inspires me without a sound.
She touches me and I get turned ’round.

She’s got a way of showin’
How I make her feel,
And I find the strength to keep on goin’.
She’s got a light around her
And everywhere she goes
A million dreams of love surround her everywhere.

She comes to me when I’m feelin’ down,
Inspires me without a sound.
She touches me and I get turned ’round.

She’s got a smile that heals me.
Oh, I don’t know why it is,
But I have to laugh when she reveals me.
She’s got a way about her.
I don’t know what it is,
But I know that I can’t live without her anyway.” - Billy Joel, “She’s Got A Way”

Comments were borked, but now they’re fixed…

Published by Taliesin under Technology

Hey everyone! Sorry about the little comments glitch after I switched to this theme.  I didn’t realized until a friend told me that comments weren’t working.

As to what, exactly, was wrong, I have NO idea. lol.  The best I can figure is that the guy who created this theme was trying to do something fancy with AJAX.  As I used to tell a friend in college, KISS! (Keep It Short and Simple)  The fancier you get, the more likely your stuff is to not work.  Furthermore, I know nothing about coding AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript And XML), so fixing his little AJAX dealie was somewhat beyond my abilities.  However, I looked at previous themes where the comment worked, and they just called the WordPress comment PHP file, like WordPress was designed to work.  lol.  I commented out his little AJAX nonsense, and it magically works now.  :)

All of this technobabble aside, please feel free to comment as you couldn’t yesterday!  If you notice any problems, please let me know!

Blog, I have not forgotten thee!

Published by Taliesin under Faith, Random Topics

Seriously, though…I have not forgotten my blog. Kim and I have been fairly busy since we returned to the States. I posted about my Vegas trip, etc. Since then, I’ve had very little to write on, and when I HAVE come up with something about which to write, I’ve not had the time.

I would like to ask for prayer for a friend who is at something called Jesus Camp, where he’s learning about all kinds of unbiblical practices. We’ve taken to calling it Heresy Camp, and while I’m sure that’s bound to get him in trouble with the Heresy Camp staff, it more accurately describes what is taught there.

For what it’s worth, my friend did not WANT to go to this camp…he was forced to go by his mother. He’s taking a Westminster Confession of Faith and a book on Calvinism, so that could actually get him thrown out, which would be a good thing, in my opinion. Please pray that he’s discerning about what he is being subjected to, and that the Holy Spirit would strengthen him against these extra-biblical things.

=====================

In other news, a couple of friends and I are considering marketing a new energy drink called Superstar. Basically, Superstar (from the Andrew Lloyd Webber rock-opera Jesus Christ, Superstar) contains 5,200% of your recommended weekly allowance of the Holy Spirit. It’s a drink to be used in place of wine at the Lord’s Supper (since we all know that wine is evil, and thus Christ must have been confused when he instituted His Supper.) With this Holy Spirit-infused energy drink “do this as often as you do it” needs only to be once a year, if you’re too busy otherwise. Superstar has way more of the Holy Spirit than the other leading Communion beverage…grape juice.

For those of you concerned about a potential overdose on the Holy Spirit, we would like to point you to the fact that it’s obviously not something about which Christ was overly concerned. After all, he said to “do this as often as you do it in remembrance of Me.” If the Holy Spirit were dangerous, He would have warned against Communion too frequently. Thus, we have concluded that the Holy Spirit must be water-soluble.

For those of you who are concerned that we are changing one of the elements of Communion, I will attempt to alleviate your fears. First off, if your church is using the obviously inferior element of grape juice for Communion, I’d like to point out that you’ve already changed the element of Communion, since Christ instituted His Supper with wine. If you’re currently using wine in communion, then I fear you’re too far gone to benefit from our product. A deliverance ministry is obviously in order.

Everything I have posted in this message except that about my busy life and my friend at Heresy Camp is a joke and ought to be taken as such! If you can’t laugh at this, then don’t laugh. If you’re offended by this, then I recommend staying in your house, pillow over your head. It’s the only way I can think for you to avoid all potential offensive remarks.

Home sick again, and thoughts on Las Vegas…

Published by Taliesin under Random Topics

Hello everyone.  Yes, I’m home sick again. I never planned to be sick.  I planned to go back to work and finish getting caught up from being off for 3 weeks, but things have an interesting way of not working out the way I intend.

To begin with, I had to go to Las Vegas this week.  Before you say anything, yes, I HAD to.  I didn’t really WANT to.  I was just getting used to Central Valley summer weather.  I had no desire to travel (by car) to a desert where it is 95 degrees at 10:30pm.

Vegas was…well…everything I thought it would be. Perhaps I didn’t do Vegas “right”, but I really didn’t enjoy my time there.  We got there at about 7pm at night, checked into the hotel, had some dinner, and then walked to the strip, where we saw 2 of the Bellagio water shows.  Woke up the next morning after a night of very little sleep owing to the fact that I forgot my breathing machine, and headed off to the hour training session that I was there for. The training session was alright, I suppose.  I took some notes, that I think will come in handy. Then we headed home.

Near as I can figure, I didn’t enjoy Vegas because it’s not my “thing”.  I don’t like clubbing. I am not about to go to a strip club. I don’t like massive crowds of people. I generally don’t gamble. (Just a personal choice. If gambling brings you entertainment, go for it.  Gambling is at least a form of entertainment that has a chance of paying you back.  lol.)  There’s really nothing in Vegas that I’m interested in.  Add to that the fact that it’s unbelievably HOT, and you have a place that is about as anti-Chris as you can get.

Either in Vegas, or on the way home, I picked up some sort of bug that gave me a fever, headache, and uncontrollable shivering.  That’s sort of slacked off some, but I’m going to sleep the rest of the day.  I’m still really tired.

This weekend should be fun, if I can make it there.  LOL.  My mom is coming over, and we’re watching the first couple Harry Potter movies, as she’s not seen them yet.  It should be relaxing and fun, which is exactly what I need.  :)

Serenity Players: I need your e-mail address

Published by Taliesin under Pen and Paper RPG's

Ok.  Serenity: The RPG is gearing up.  I’m not ready to begin creating characters quite yet, but I’m putting some things in place to get ready for it. I’ve got some ideas I’m hoping to implement for our group that will help keep us close when we all live in so many different towns, but the first step in that is to create a mailing list.  This mailing list will contain one address from each of you, and I would appreciate if it’s an e-mail address you check somewhat frequently, as I’m going to use this list to help distribute news, etc.

Some of the other plans I’ve got in the works: A Forum so that you guys can talk about strategies, storylines, etc.  I’m also hoping to post what I call Game Logs after each session, so that if someone has to miss a game, they’ll know what they missed, or if you want to review something that happened, it’ll be up there.

Another thing that will be on the forum is a section for House Rules, and Group Rules. House Rules are rules of the game that we’ve either added, or changed from the original set of rules.  No game is perfect in print, and House Rules are very common.  Less common is the group that can remember all their house rules.  Having them up on the forums is one way to keep them all in view.  Group Rules are rules that we create for our particular gaming group.  These rules will apply no matter what game we’re playing.  They’re rules of conduct, etc.  Again, having them on the forums will make it easy for everyone to remember them.

Most of you have my address, and those that don’t can get it from someone you know.  If you’re planning on playing Serenity, or even if you’re not sure, but want to stay in the loop just in case, send me your address, and I’ll put you on the list.  Thanx.

So how was Scotland?

Published by Taliesin under Scotland

Scotland was completely amazing!  Was it everything I thought it would be?  Well, yes, and no.  I’ve been building this trip up for years in my mind and heart.  Did I think things would be different?  In one sense, yeah.  I didn’t feel the connection with Scotland as much as I thought I would.  Does that mean I didn’t have fun, or that I would have done anything differently?  Not in the least.  I had an absolute blast.  However, I had no idea at the sad state of good ale in Scotland.  I was very pleased to find some very cool people at Black Isle Brewing Company, Isle of Skye Brewing Company, and especially Fyne Ales pushing back the boundaries of Beer Ignorance in Scotland, but they have an uphill battle.  I wish them well in their brewing endeavors.  if I can help in any way, I’ll most definitely do that.

Did I feel a connection to my family’s homeland?  Sure, I did.  I really loved being in Stirling, near and on Loch Lomond, and seeing the ruins of Arnhall Castle.  All of that was completely awesome.  But it wasn’t so overpowering that it was hard for me to leave.  It’s possible that I just did not count on being homesick, as I’ve never really experienced homesickness.  3 weeks is a long time to be gone, and we were very happy to get home, which is something I don’t think I planned on experiencing.

However, I personally think that what was missing in Scotland was my friends.  I can’t tell you how many times Kim and I said “If only Gabe could be here to experience this.”  “If only Daniel and Julie were here so that Daniel could get all snobby and we could make fun of him.”  “If only Derek could be here to see how important Clan Cameron was to the history of Scotland.”  So many “if only’s”.  My friends have always been important to me, and having them there would have added a whole lot to the trip.

Anyway, we had an absolute blast, and it’s definitely been one of the coolest experiences of my life.  Experiencing them with my wonderful bride was absolutely amazing, and I don’t regret a moment we got to spend there together.  It was perfect, really.  But that’s not to say it couldn’t have been more perfect.

In all, we’re happy to be home, but looking forward to the day when we can go again!

Back in the States!

Published by Taliesin under Random Topics, Scotland

Well, we made it back to the States, and I can honestly say that I am too tired to post anything more about it at the moment.  Today is the 4th of July, and I fully intend to make use of this day to rest up, and get myself ready for work tomorrow.  :)

Hope you are all having a wonderful 4th of July!

Well, we’re off to Manchester, England today

Published by Taliesin under Scotland, Technology

I don’t know if our hotel in Manchester has Internet, so it might be the evening of the 3rd or morning of the 4th before I can post again. The next time I have Internet, I’ll work on getting the rest of our Scotland pictures posted, etc.

In other news, I have heard reports that the “Next” link at the bottom of my blog is not working for some. At the moment, it’s working for me, though I do not take that as definitive proof that it works. From this hotel, much is weird with thedow.org, and I don’t know why. At the moment, I’m having to type this post using an “anonymizer”, which is kind of crappy, but the only way I can currently check mail and post in my blog. :)

I will take a look at this when I get home and see if I can duplicate the results. Also when I get home, I’ll be changing the theme of my blog, which might fix the problem for those who are having it.

For the moment, if you want to view all the Scotland posts, etc, make sure to click the Scotland category on the right. This will limit what posts you see to the Scotland category only, and will mean you have to click the “Next” link far less.

Sorry about the inconvenience for you all!

Finally, you can now register as a user to my blog, if you like. The main benefit this gives you is that it stores your user information on the blog itself, so if you want to write several comments, you can log in, and all your user information will be taken care of for you. If you would like to register, look for the Register link on the right side of the screen. If you are already registered, you may simply click Login, if you need to log in.

As a registered user of this blog, you won’t be able to write posts or anything…it’s really just a matter of convenience. Also, if I decide later to open up the blog to other writers, I’ll be able to just change your security level so that you can contribute, but not administer the blog. It’s up to you, if you’d like to register as a user. As always, the ability to post comments (after moderation) will remain open to all visitors of the blog, in the interests of participation. :) Please let me know if you have any questions!

In Glasgow, though not for long today!

Published by Taliesin under Scotland

With the change in flights, we knew we needed to cram as much into today as we could.  We woke up too late for church this morning, after the late night rearranging our flight, and booking accommodation in Manchester, so we went down for breakfast, and then headed over to Glasgow Central railway station to book our train ride to Manchester, so now everything is set for our changed itinerary!

From there, we headed to Glasgow Queen Street railway station, as that’s the place to go if you want a train ride to Edinburgh.  (On the weekdays, trains leave every 15 minutes for Edinburgh. On Sundays, trains leave every half hour or so.) Now armed with our train tickets to Edinburgh (which cost about 1/5 of what we paid for our train tickets to Manchester), we boarded the train.

Having seen both Edinburgh and Glasgow, I can honestly say I like Edinburgh far better.  It’s a more friendly, more welcoming town than Glasgow, and I’m going to miss it a great deal.

We did some exchanges of gifts that we got, and bought a few new ones. In all, it was really enjoyable.  They even had a couple street performers that weren’t there when we were there before.  There was a young juggler, a man pretending to be a statue from hundreds of years ago, and an all-female drumming group, and they were all pretty darn good.  Of course, there were the standard pipers scattered along the Royal Mile.  Edinburgh felt very alive, today.

After finishing what we needed to get done in Edinburgh, we hopped on the train for the 1 hour return trip to Glasgow.  When we got to Glasgow, there was the threat of rain in the sky, and indeed it had been raining on the way, as evidenced by the water that had been pouring off the train. We decided that we wouldn’t have much time to get anything done in Glasgow tomorrow, so we went to the Glasgow Cathedral, which was pretty.  We even got a nice shot of what we think is the John Knox statue with the setting sun behind it.  Very pretty.

It was time for dinner, so we went to Dow’s Pub by Queen Street Station, which we found out didn’t have food on Sundays, so we went to this Free House across from George Square, which had excellent food, and was completely HUGE inside!!  (A free house is a pub that is privately owned.  See, I found out that one of the reasons no pubs in the big towns have really decent ales on cask is that they are owned by the same companies that own the major breweries.  Or else, they’re owned by giant pub groups, which have deals with the major breweries, so they only serve the major stuff, which for the most part really don’t say anything bold…they’re inoffensive ales, which is the best that can be said of them.)  Anyway, this free house had Abbott Ale on cask, which I really liked, and the best Steak and Ale pie I’ve ever eaten.  Kim had 4-Cheese Ravioli’s which she said were really good.

Then, back to the hotel for some re-packing of our stuff to make it train and plane friendly.  We think we’ll get ourselves down to 1 carry-on, which is what is allowed from the UK.  We’ll see how it goes.

Well, I’m off to bed, but tomorrow is an awesome day, as we’re going to the town from which we’ll be flying home.  Scotland has been an amazing trip, and I look forward to coming back, but Scotland is definitely lacking something for us: Our friends, and our bed.  :)  Also, we’d like to have some days where we don’t have to cart around our luggage with us every couple of days.  But we definitely miss everyone in the States, and are looking forward to getting back!!  See you all in a couple days!

Flight information changed…

Published by Taliesin under Scotland

We were going to fly out of Glasgow, but that has been changed.  Instead, we’re flying out of Manchester, England, which will connect with our original Philadelphia flight.  lol.  It’s been an ordeal that kept us up until 1:30am this morning.  We had to reserve hotels, etc.  What a pain.  Glad it’s over.

Well, we’re off to Edinburgh to do some last minute shopping.  :)  See you all on the flip side!
