This morning, I was listening to the Bob and Tom Show, which I usually like. I know Bob and Tom are not Christians…they’ve admitted their dislike of religion and religious institutions. I don’t have a problem with that. Most people dislike true Christianity. However, their dislike of zealous Christianity usually is also directed against radical Muslims, etc. While Bob and Tom dislike the fanatic Muslim religion, they made some comments that quite angered me this morning.
They were talking about the FCC, and how the FCC will fine television stations about $325,000 if they air 9/11 footage in a documentary about…9/11, because of the swearing of some firemen. Read the full story here. (Link opens in new window.) This understandably angered Bob and Tom, who see their show’s ability to air sexually suggestive content dwindling. Tom said, and I paraphrase, that the Christian right should all be shot and their homes burned for seeking to limit free speech in this country.
Oh, really?
Listen, I support your right to say that on the air, however misguided and retarded it may be. THE RIGHT seeks to limit free speech? And I suppose you would claim that the Left is the last bastion of free speech, then? Well, you would be wrong. Look at this story. (Link opens in new window.)
So, in this story, we see that the left loves free speech as long as the speech in question is filthy, sexually suggestive, or directed at the right (Christians, specifically.) In that story, we see Bill Clinton directing ABC to edit their docudrama, “The Patch to 9/11″ claiming that it incorrectly portrays Clinton’s administration as being the indirect cause of 9/11. Who’s destroying free speech now?? Who is forbidding that the press report as they see it? The left, and the left’s poster boy, Bill Clinton.
Have the Republicans done the same thing? I’m sure they have, but the liberals were able to watch and revel in the Michael Moore films, weren’t they? As the story says, “Michael Moore, Oliver Stone and most of Hollywood” have taken shot after shot at the conservative right, and they roll with the punches. There are many who claim that Clinton’s very dramatic reaction to this film is because the claims presented in this film are true. I don’t know about this, but I DO know that they should have been allowed to air whatever they want, if free speech is to be preserved.
Let’s be honest here. There have been several violations of free speech in our nation’s history, but to claim that the Christians or the Republicans are the source of it all is patently false, and completely dishonest.
Here’s something else to gnaw on, people. I heard on the radio that Bill Clinton was making noise that he would sue to makers of this film for defamation. Whether or not this is true, defamation is not a claim that Billy-Boy can level against anyone. He’s a public figure. By becoming a public figure, he is allowing the world to make fun of him in whatever way he sees fit. He can denounce claims that he slept with an intern named Monica Lewinsky. He can claim that the film’s portrayal of his dereliction of his duties because of his affair was wrong. But they have every right to say it. That’s what being a public figure is all about.
I hope you get a chance to read this before Bill Clinton demands that I remove it from my site. :)
